Here at Car Plates Direct we make the physical plates - you’ll need to own (or be buying for someone who owns) the registration before we can make your plates up.

We take major credit cards as well as PayPal, Apple Pay and GPay.

You can also check out as a guest through PayPal without needing a PayPal account - this lets you pay with your credit or debit card.

Important: you can’t invent or make up a registration number and use it on UK roads. You (or the person you’re buying for) must already own the registration you intend to use.

When you type your reg on our website it appears exactly as you type it, so please check the spacing carefully - we can’t offer refunds or reprints for typing or design errors. A warning box automatically appears if you don’t add a space to your registration, and you have to accept it to continue.

There are two plate designs on the menu:

• Legal Style - includes all the relevant legal markings.
• Show Plate - no design restrictions (off-road use only).

Our print process is on demand, so once you choose your design and pay, your plates are automatically printed and sent for construction. At no point does the production team see how you requested the spacing, and they can’t alter your design - so please type your registration and spacing correctly.

Once you’ve completed your purchase you’ll receive two emails:

1. A payment receipt (from PayPal) with your order number, sent to your registered payment email address.
2. An order confirmation from us showing the delivery address and design of your order.

Please check your junk folders - we email the address associated with your payment.

We print orders as soon as they’re placed, so in some cases it may not be possible to issue a refund once the plates have already been made. If you want to cancel, please contact us straight away (within the hour). If the plates haven’t yet been sent to production, we’ll issue a full refund.

Step 1 - Remove the old plates and clean the surface. Our sticky pads are very strong when applied to a clean, dry surface. Remove the original plates and use surface cleaner to remove any residue, dirt or old sticky pads from your bumper. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before fitting, especially when using sticky pads.

Step 2 - Fit using the sticky pads. Evenly place the supplied sticky pads on the back of the new plate and remove the backing. Position the plate centrally on the bumper, then apply firm pressure across the plate. Once stuck, test it by pulling gently - if the surface was clean and dry it won’t move.

Step 3 - Or fit using the supplied screws. Using your old plates as a guide, place them on top of the new plate to mark where to drill the screw holes.

Important: always drill through the face (front printed side) of the new plates - drilling from the back will cause the printed film to lift. Once drilled, line up and drive the screw through the new plate and into the bumper. Screw until tight and secure.

The rule is one kit per plate. One kit includes 6 sticky pads (enough to fix one plate), plus 4 screws and 2 of each cap (enough for 1-2 plates, depending on how many screws you use). Most plates are fixed with 2 screws, but some use 4. You can choose how many kits you need at checkout.

No, we don’t offer a pre-drilling service, as the hole positions on your existing plates can vary from vehicle to vehicle.

You can space your plates exactly as you like and they’ll be made as you see them online. To be UK road-legal, you must add one space in the correct position - please refer to your V5C log book and existing plates.

If you choose Legal Style, the builder automatically spaces your registration in the correct legal format and adds all the relevant markings.

If you choose Show Plate, you’re free to space your registration however you wish, but Show Plates do not include the British Standard number or legal details, and are used at your own risk on UK roads.

The materials used are exactly the same.

Legal Style plates include all the legal markings - the manufacturer’s name and postcode and the British Standard number on the bottom line - and are spaced as shown on your V5C or V750 certificate, in line with DVLA and police requirements.

Show Plates don’t include legal details and are for off-road show use only. They allow a more design-oriented look and layout (for example, non-legal spacing) and are used at your own risk on UK roads.

The legal details are a requirement for all UK number plates and display the maker’s name, postcode and the British Standard. For this reason they’re a default option on Legal Style plates. You can deselect them by choosing Show Plate, which prints no legal details and also lets you add your own slogan - but Show Plates are used at your own risk on UK roads. The legal details are printed in the smallest black font available, in the bottom right-hand corner.

Yes. All of our plate materials meet British Standard BS AU 145e and are fully reflective.

Occasionally the crossing from Jersey may be delayed by bad weather, which is also out of our control. No refunds are given for orders dispatched on time by Car Plates Direct but delayed within the postal system.
