What Are 3D Gel Number Plates?

3D gel number plates — sometimes called domed gel plates — feature characters that are physically raised above the surface of the plate face. Unlike a standard flat plate where the letters and numbers are simply printed, gel plates use legally-sized acrylic or polycarbonate characters that are individually coated with a dome of polyurethane resin. The resin flows to the edges of each character, then sets in a low-heat curing process that removes air bubbles and produces a smooth, glassy dome. The finished characters are bonded to the plate backing with high-strength 3M adhesive tape, giving them a “floating” appearance that looks striking from any angle.

The key difference between 3D gel plates and 4D laser-cut plates is the manufacturing method. 3D gel characters have a curved, dome-like top surface created by the flowing resin, giving a softer, more rounded look. 4D plates use solid acrylic laser-cut characters, producing sharp, square-edged letters with a more angular, modern appearance. Both are road legal provided the characters are single-shade black — two-tone, coloured, or carbon-effect 3D gel characters are not compliant under the current BS AU 145e standard introduced in September 2021 and must not be used on public roads.

One of the biggest practical benefits of gel plates is durability. The polyurethane coating acts as a protective layer over each character, making them resistant to UV degradation, road salt, car-wash chemicals, and physical abrasion. Standard printed or painted flat plates can fade, chip, and discolour over several years of outdoor exposure, whereas well-made gel plates typically retain their appearance far longer. Fitting is straightforward: most gel plates use the same standard oblong dimensions as conventional plates (520mm × 111mm) and attach using the existing screw holes or adhesive pads on your vehicle. If your car has a fixed surround, make sure you measure the recess depth — the slight additional height of the gel characters means a deep-recessed surround may need to be checked before fitting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are 3D gel number plates road legal in the UK?
Yes — provided they comply with BS AU 145e, which has been mandatory since 1 September 2021. This means the characters must be single-shade black, displayed on a white reflective front plate and a yellow reflective rear plate, and the plate must show the supplier name, postcode, and British Standard number. All plates made by Car Plates Direct meet these requirements. Note that coloured or two-tone gel characters are not road legal under the current standard.
Will 3D gel plates pass an MOT?
Yes, our 3D gel plates are fully MOT-compliant. MOT testers check that plates are legible, correctly formatted, and show the required markings. A properly manufactured BS AU 145e gel plate passes these checks. If your plate has faded, cracked, or the characters are partially obscured, an MOT tester can fail the vehicle — another good reason to order quality replacement gel plates when needed.
What is the difference between 3D gel and 4D laser-cut plates?
Both produce raised characters, but the manufacturing process differs. 3D gel plates have characters topped with a flowing polyurethane resin dome — giving a rounded, curved top surface with a soft, glassy look. 4D plates use solid acrylic characters cut by laser, giving crisp, square-edged letters with a sharper, more angular finish. Both styles are road legal when produced to BS AU 145e. The choice is largely down to personal taste: gel for a classic premium look, 4D for a more contemporary, architectural appearance.
Can I get 3D gel plates in different colours?
The characters themselves must be single-shade black to be road legal. However, you can still personalise your plates significantly: choose coloured borders, add a flag badge (GB, England, Scotland, Wales), include a dealer or club badge, and add a custom slogan in the legal zone at the bottom of the plate. Background options include standard white/yellow or a carbon-fibre effect. Fully coloured gel characters are available as show plates only and must not be used on public roads.
How long do 3D gel plates last?
With normal road use, quality gel plates should last several years before showing signs of wear. The polyurethane resin dome protects each character from UV fading, rain, frost, road salt, and car-wash chemicals. To prolong life, avoid harsh abrasive cleaners directly on the plate face. If you notice any lifting at the edges or cracking of the gel surface, it’s time to order replacements — a damaged or illegible plate is an MOT failure point and can attract a fine.
Do I need to provide any documents to order 3D gel plates?
Yes. Under DVLA regulations, all number plate suppliers must verify that the buyer is entitled to display the registration. You’ll need to provide one of: your vehicle’s V5C logbook, a certificate of entitlement, a retention certificate, or a new keeper supplement. We’ll ask you to upload a copy during checkout — it’s a quick process and your documents are handled securely.
Are gel plates easy to fit at home?
Yes. Most vehicles use either screws or adhesive sticky pads to secure plates, and gel plates use identical fixings to standard flat plates. For screw-fixed plates, simply align the holes and secure with the supplied screws. For adhesive-fixed plates, clean the bumper surface first with an alcohol wipe for a strong bond. The only thing to check in advance is whether your vehicle has a deep-recessed surround — the gel characters add a small amount of height above the plate surface, so very shallow surrounds may need to be adjusted or replaced.
