When Do You Need Replacement Number Plates?

Number plates deteriorate over time. UV exposure causes the reflective background to yellow and fade. Road debris chips characters and cracks the polycarbonate face. Winter salt corrodes fixings and causes lifting at the edges. Even a seemingly minor crack across a character can be enough for an MOT tester to mark it as a fail — and police can issue a fine of up to £1,000 for an illegible or non-compliant plate. If your plates are showing any of the following, it is time to replace them: yellowing or discolouration of the background; faded, cracked, or chipped characters; visible cracks across the plate face; characters that have started to lift or peel; or physical damage from a minor collision or car park scrape.

Theft is also a significant reason drivers need replacement plates. Plate cloning — where criminals copy a legitimate registration and attach it to a stolen vehicle to evade detection — remains a serious issue in the UK. If your plates have been removed and stolen, you should report this to the police and obtain a crime reference number. You may then order direct replacement plates from us, and you should also consider notifying the DVLA. Having a crime reference number on record provides important protection if the stolen plates are later linked to offences.

What Documents Do You Need?

Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, number plate suppliers are legally required to verify your entitlement to display a given registration before manufacturing a plate. This applies whether you are ordering new plates for the first time or replacing existing ones. You must provide one of the following:

Accepted Proof of Entitlement

  • V5C vehicle registration certificate (logbook) showing the registration
  • V5C/2 new keeper supplement (for recently purchased vehicles)
  • Certificate of entitlement (V778) for a private registration
  • DVLA retention document (V778) or transfer certificate
  • Current insurance certificate showing the vehicle registration
  • Current vehicle tax (road tax) certificate or digital record showing the registration

You’ll also need to provide proof of your own identity — a driving licence or passport is standard. We handle all uploads securely through our checkout process and your documents are not retained beyond the legally required period. Once verified, we record your name, address, and the registration — a legal obligation placed on all DVLA-registered number plate suppliers to maintain a record of every plate they produce for a minimum of three years.

Important: Driving with an illegible, faded, or damaged number plate can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and an MOT failure. Don’t wait until your MOT — if your plates are showing signs of wear, replacement plates from Car Plates Direct are quick, affordable, and fully road legal.

Replacement Plates — FAQs

Can I keep the same registration when I replace my plates?
Yes, absolutely. Replacement plates display exactly the same registration as your existing plates — you are simply getting new physical plates bearing your existing reg. The registration number is assigned to your vehicle in the DVLA’s records and stays with it (or with you, if it is a retained personal registration) regardless of how many times you replace the physical plates. Ordering replacement plates from us does not affect your DVLA records in any way.
My plates were stolen — what should I do?
First, report the theft to the police and obtain a crime reference number. This is important because stolen plates are often used on other vehicles to conceal their identity, and having a police report protects you from associated liability. You should also notify the DVLA of the theft. Then order replacement plates from us — you’ll need your V5C and ID as normal. Keep your crime reference number safe in case it is needed in future. There is no need to change your registration number in most cases.
Will a replacement plate pass my MOT?
Yes. All replacement plates from Car Plates Direct are manufactured to BS AU 145e and include the required supplier details — they meet every requirement checked during an MOT plate inspection. In fact, if your current plates are faded, cracked, or damaged, ordering replacement plates before your MOT is a simple way to avoid a fail on this item.
What documents do I need to provide to buy replacement plates?
You need proof of entitlement to the registration (such as your V5C logbook, insurance certificate, or a DVLA certificate of entitlement) and proof of identity (driving licence or passport). This is a legal requirement placed on all DVLA-registered plate suppliers. You upload scans or photos of these documents during checkout — the process is quick and your documents are handled securely.
How quickly will my replacement plates arrive?
We manufacture plates quickly and offer a choice of delivery speeds including standard and express UK delivery. Most orders are despatched the same or next working day. If you need plates urgently — for example before an MOT — select our express delivery option at checkout and contact us on 0330 024 9273 if you have any concerns about timing.
Can I upgrade my style when ordering replacement plates?
Yes — replacing your plates is a great opportunity to upgrade. If your original plates were standard flat printed, you can order the same registration on 3D gel or 4D laser-cut plates, add a flag badge, choose a carbon-fibre background, or add a coloured border. The new plates must still comply with BS AU 145e to be road legal, but within those rules there is plenty of scope to personalise.
Is it illegal to drive with a damaged or faded number plate?
Yes. Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, number plates must be clearly legible and in good condition. A plate with cracked characters, significant fading, a cracked face, or damaged reflective backing can result in a fixed penalty notice and a fine of up to £1,000. Damaged plates can also cause an MOT failure. If your plates are in poor condition, replace them promptly.
