What Makes a Number Plate “Premium”?
The word premium gets used loosely in the number plate industry, but at Car Plates Direct we define it clearly: premium plates are those that use higher-grade materials, more precise manufacturing processes and finish options that go beyond the standard pressed acrylic baseline. There are two distinct categories — road-legal premium plates (3D gel and 4D laser-cut) and show/display premium plates (carbon, hex, neon, coloured characters) — and it’s important to understand the difference before ordering.
Road-legal premium plates must conform to BS AU 145e. This means the background must be white (front) or yellow reflective (rear), characters must be black and in the correct Charles Wright 2001 font, and the plate dimensions must be correct for the vehicle. Within those constraints, you can choose 3D gel characters or 4D laser-cut characters and still be fully road legal and MOT-compliant. The raised characters do not affect legibility and are explicitly permitted under the current British Standard.
Show plates, by contrast, can feature any background colour, any font, coloured characters, logos, custom text, carbon or hex patterning — but they must never be fitted to a vehicle used on a public road. They are intended for garage display, car shows, photoshoots, events and gifting. We clearly label all show plates as “not for road use” and they are sold with that understanding.

Are 4D number plates legal for road use in the UK?
Yes — 4D laser-cut plates are road legal in the UK provided they comply with BS AU 145e. This means they must use the correct Charles Wright font, correct character dimensions and spacing, the correct plate dimensions for the vehicle, and standard white (front) / yellow reflective (rear) backgrounds with black characters. Our 4D plates meet all of these requirements.
The raised acrylic characters are not prohibited by the British Standard — what matters is that the registration is clearly legible and the plate meets the physical and visual specifications set out in the standard. We manufacture every 4D road-legal plate to these specifications.
Can I have a carbon fibre background on a road-legal plate?
No — carbon fibre, hex pattern, and any non-standard coloured backgrounds are not permitted on road-legal number plates. Road-legal plates must have a white reflective background (front) or yellow reflective background (rear). Any plate with a carbon fibre or alternative patterned background is classified as a show plate and must not be used on a vehicle driven on public roads.
We clearly mark all show plates as display-only at the point of purchase. If you’re looking for premium styling that’s road legal, our 4D or 3D gel plates on standard white/yellow backgrounds are the answer.
What documents do I need to order premium road-legal plates?
As a DVLA-registered number plate supplier, we are legally required to verify your entitlement to the registration before producing a road-legal plate. You will need to supply one of the following:
- Vehicle V5C logbook (showing your name and current address)
- New keeper supplement (V5C/2)
- DVLA certificate of entitlement for a personalised registration
- A valid lease or hire agreement in your name
Show plates do not require any documentation — you can order these without providing any entitlement proof.
Do premium plates affect my MOT?
Road-legal 3D gel and 4D plates from a DVLA-registered supplier will not cause an MOT failure. MOT testers check that the plate is legible, correctly formatted and securely mounted. They do not have any basis to fail a plate simply because it has raised 3D or 4D characters, provided those characters are in the correct font, correct dimensions and correctly spaced. Our plates are manufactured to BS AU 145e which is the standard used by MOT testers when assessing number plates.
Can I order a show plate as a gift without knowing the vehicle’s reg?
Yes — show plates can be ordered with any text at all, they do not need to reflect an actual vehicle registration. This makes them extremely flexible as gifts. Popular options include the recipient’s name, a memorable date, an inside joke, or a fantasy plate they always wished they had. Because show plates are display-only, no vehicle documentation is required to order them.
What is the difference between 3D gel and 4D plates visually?
The difference is most visible when viewed from an angle or in different lighting conditions. 3D gel plates have a smooth, rounded, glossy dome over each character — the effect is subtle and refined, particularly complementary on luxury and executive vehicles. 4D plates have flat-top acrylic characters with sharply defined vertical sides — the look is bolder, more contemporary and more graphic, catching light in a different way. Side by side, the 4D plate is visually more assertive; the 3D gel plate is more understated. Which you prefer is a matter of taste and the character of your vehicle.
Do you offer neon number plates?
We supply show plates with neon-effect coloured characters. These are plates where the raised characters are in a vivid colour — yellow, green, blue, red or other colours — rather than the standard black. These are strictly for show use and display only and must not be fitted to a vehicle used on a public road, as coloured characters do not comply with BS AU 145e road-use requirements. They are popular for car shows, track day events (where no road-use plates are needed), photoshoots and indoor display in garages or showrooms.
