What Are Short Number Plates?
A short number plate — sometimes called an oblong or narrow plate — is a plate whose width is reduced to fit snugly around the specific number of characters in your registration, rather than using the standard full-width 520mm oblong. In the UK, standard current-format registrations contain seven characters (e.g. AB12 CDE), and the 520mm × 111mm plate is sized to accommodate this comfortably. But many registrations — particularly dateless cherished marks, suffix and prefix plates, or short personal plates — contain only four, five, or six characters. Fitting a short registration on a full-width standard plate leaves large gaps at each end, which looks unbalanced, especially on a classic or prestige vehicle where aesthetics matter.
Short plates solve this by reducing the width proportionally to the character count, while keeping the height (111mm) and all character dimensions exactly the same as required by law. This ensures the plate still passes all DVLA legibility standards and remains fully road legal. The character height remains 79mm, stroke width 14mm, and the gaps between characters are maintained exactly as specified in the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. What changes is only the overall width of the backing plate — the characters themselves are identical to any other compliant plate. Our standard short plate dimensions are listed below:
| Characters on Plate | Width | Height | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 characters | 287mm | 111mm | Very short dateless marks (e.g. A 1) |
| 5 characters | 348mm | 111mm | Prefix plates (e.g. A12 BCD) |
| 6 characters | 409mm | 111mm | Suffix/short personal plates |
| 7 characters | 470mm | 111mm | Current-format marks in tighter recesses |
Short plates are particularly popular with owners of classic British cars, Italian sports cars, and prestige marques such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Porsche, where the plate recess is often shorter than 520mm. They are also widely used on motorcycles (where different sizing rules apply under separate regulations) and on imported vehicles from markets where different plate proportions are the norm. Whatever your vehicle, if a standard plate looks disproportionate or physically doesn’t fit your recess, a correctly sized short plate is the legal and tidy solution.
