What Are Short Number Plates?

A short number plate — sometimes called an oblong or narrow plate — is a plate whose width is reduced to fit snugly around the specific number of characters in your registration, rather than using the standard full-width 520mm oblong. In the UK, standard current-format registrations contain seven characters (e.g. AB12 CDE), and the 520mm × 111mm plate is sized to accommodate this comfortably. But many registrations — particularly dateless cherished marks, suffix and prefix plates, or short personal plates — contain only four, five, or six characters. Fitting a short registration on a full-width standard plate leaves large gaps at each end, which looks unbalanced, especially on a classic or prestige vehicle where aesthetics matter.

Short plates solve this by reducing the width proportionally to the character count, while keeping the height (111mm) and all character dimensions exactly the same as required by law. This ensures the plate still passes all DVLA legibility standards and remains fully road legal. The character height remains 79mm, stroke width 14mm, and the gaps between characters are maintained exactly as specified in the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. What changes is only the overall width of the backing plate — the characters themselves are identical to any other compliant plate. Our standard short plate dimensions are listed below:

Characters on Plate Width Height Typical Use
4 characters 287mm 111mm Very short dateless marks (e.g. A 1)
5 characters 348mm 111mm Prefix plates (e.g. A12 BCD)
6 characters 409mm 111mm Suffix/short personal plates
7 characters 470mm 111mm Current-format marks in tighter recesses

Short plates are particularly popular with owners of classic British cars, Italian sports cars, and prestige marques such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, and Porsche, where the plate recess is often shorter than 520mm. They are also widely used on motorcycles (where different sizing rules apply under separate regulations) and on imported vehicles from markets where different plate proportions are the norm. Whatever your vehicle, if a standard plate looks disproportionate or physically doesn’t fit your recess, a correctly sized short plate is the legal and tidy solution.

Short Number Plates — FAQs

Are short number plates legal in the UK?
Yes — short plates are entirely road legal, provided they comply with BS AU 145e and the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. The law governs character size, font, spacing, and the reflective background — it does not specify a minimum overall plate width for standard vehicles. As long as the characters are correctly sized and spaced, a shorter backing plate is perfectly legal. All short plates supplied by Car Plates Direct carry the required British Standard mark and our supplier details.
Which vehicles most commonly use short plates?
Short plates are most commonly used on classic and vintage cars (especially those with shorter rear recesses), prestige and sports cars (Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, Aston Martin), kit cars, older British Leyland and Ford models, and some imported Japanese or European vehicles. They are also popular with owners of cherished dateless registrations — for example a three-digit plate like “123 A” looks much neater on a correctly-sized short plate than on a standard-width oblong with large blank areas at the edges.
Do short plates pass an MOT?
Yes, provided they are manufactured to the correct standard. MOT testers check that characters are legible, correctly formed, and properly spaced — they do not measure the total width of the plate. A short plate manufactured to BS AU 145e with correct character dimensions and required markings will pass an MOT check without issue.
Can I get a short plate in 3D gel or 4D style?
Absolutely. Short plates are available in all the same styles as standard-size plates: flat printed, 3D gel domed characters, or 4D laser-cut acrylic. You can also add personalisation such as flag badges (GB, England, Scotland, Wales), coloured borders, and a custom slogan in the legal display zone at the bottom. The character type must remain single-shade black to comply with BS AU 145e.
How do I know what size short plate I need?
The easiest way is to count the characters in your registration (including any spaces — so “A 1” counts as two characters and “AB12 CDE” as seven). Our plate builder automatically selects the correct width. If you also want to check whether the plate will fit your vehicle’s recess, measure the width of the existing recess and compare it to the size table above. If you’re unsure, call us on 0330 024 9273 and we’ll advise.
Can I use a short plate on a motorcycle?
Motorcycle number plates are subject to slightly different regulations under the same overarching BS AU 145e standard but with different character sizing rules. Motorcycle plates must display characters at a reduced height (64mm rather than 79mm). We manufacture motorcycle plates separately — please select the motorcycle option in our plate builder rather than a standard short plate to ensure your plate is correctly sized and legal for your bike.
