Why 4D Laser-Cut Plates Are the Premium Choice

🔬

Precision Laser Cutting

Every character is laser-cut from solid acrylic sheet to sub-millimetre accuracy, giving crisp, sharp edges that stand out at any distance.

🏔️

Bold 3–5mm Raised Effect

Characters sit 3–5mm above the plate surface — a noticeably deeper and more architectural raised effect compared to 3D gel (1.7–2mm).

💪

Industrial-Strength Adhesive

Characters are bonded using genuine 3M high-strength adhesive tape. The bond is designed to be permanent and will not lift in the weather conditions UK drivers face.

Road Legal & MOT Ready

Fully compliant with BS AU 145e using the correct Charles Wright typeface, black single-shade characters on reflective backgrounds. Will pass your MOT.

4D Laser-Cut vs 3D Gel — What’s the Difference?

Both are road legal premium finishes — but they look and feel quite different. Here’s a clear comparison to help you choose.

✨ 4D Laser-Cut Plates
  • Solid acrylic characters, laser precision-cut
  • 3–5mm raised depth — bolder and sharper
  • Angular, architectural character edges
  • Matte black finish standard (no gloss)
  • Characters bonded with 3M adhesive
  • Striking from a greater distance
  • Popular with performance and modified cars
💎 3D Gel Plates
  • Characters printed flat; gel resin applied on top
  • 1.7–2mm raised depth — subtler effect
  • Rounded, domed, glossy character profile
  • Deep high-gloss finish
  • Integral construction — no separate bonding
  • Refined, luxury appearance
  • Popular with prestige and luxury vehicles

Which should I choose?

If you want the boldest, most eye-catching raised effect with sharp, clean edges — choose 4D. If you prefer a more rounded, high-gloss, jewel-like finish — choose 3D gel. Both are fully road legal and available at Car Plates Direct.

What Exactly Are 4D Number Plates?

The term “4D” refers to the physical depth dimension added to the plate — the characters literally stand out from the plate surface in a way that creates a dramatic shadow line that changes with the angle of light. Unlike a standard flat plate where the letters are printed onto the surface, 4D plates have genuine three-dimensional acrylic characters that are individually cut and then permanently bonded to the plate face.

The process begins with solid acrylic sheet in the correct single shade of black required by BS AU 145e (post-September 2021 regulation). A computer-controlled laser traces the exact Charles Wright typeface outlines and cuts each character cleanly from the sheet. The cut characters are then positioned on the plate face and secured with 3M high-strength double-sided adhesive tape — the same industrial adhesive used in automotive trim applications. The result is a character that is genuinely part of the plate structure, not just a surface treatment.

Are 4D Number Plates Road Legal in the UK?

Yes. 4D laser-cut plates are road legal in the UK provided they meet BS AU 145e. The key requirements that must be satisfied are: the Charles Wright typeface must be used with correct dimensions; characters must be a single shade of black (no colour tints, no chrome); the plate background must be white (front) or yellow (rear) and retroreflective; and character spacing and sizing must be within the specified tolerances. The raised acrylic characters themselves are permitted — the regulations do not restrict the depth of characters above the plate surface, only their colour and shape.

It’s worth noting that from 1 September 2021, DVLA updated the regulations to require a “single shade of black” — this rules out any previously fashionable colour-tinted 4D characters (such as green, blue or pink acrylic). Any 4D plate with coloured characters is not road legal and will fail an MOT. Our 4D plates use only standard black acrylic, fully compliant with the current regulations.

⚠️ Warning about neon and coloured 4D plates: Some suppliers sell 4D plates with neon-coloured or metallic-effect characters. These have been illegal on UK roads since 1 September 2021 and will cause an MOT failure. Any plate purchased from us uses single-shade black characters as required by BS AU 145e.

How Durable Are 4D Laser-Cut Plates?

Properly manufactured 4D plates are highly durable for everyday use. The acrylic characters are resistant to UV degradation and will not fade or yellow in normal UK conditions. The 3M adhesive bond is designed for outdoor automotive use and will withstand rain, frost, heat cycles and car wash equipment. The main vulnerability of any 4D plate is physical impact — because the characters stand proud of the surface, a sufficiently hard knock or scrape could crack or dislodge an individual character. For this reason, 4D plates are best fitted to vehicles that are not regularly driven in situations where physical contact with the plate is likely (e.g., tight car parks where the plate might be scraped).

Fitting Your 4D Number Plates

Fitting 4D plates follows the same process as any standard UK number plate. The plates come pre-drilled with standard 7mm mounting holes at the correct spacing, and can be fixed using standard number plate screws (the most secure method) or number plate sticky pads for vehicles where drilling is not desirable. Ensure the mounting surface is clean and dry before fitting with adhesive pads. Do not use a high-pressure jet wash directly on the character faces — a normal car wash or hose-down is fine. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products on the plate face, as these can scratch the acrylic characters over time.

4D Number Plates — Frequently Asked Questions

Are 4D number plates road legal in the UK?
Yes — provided they comply with BS AU 145e. The key requirements are: Charles Wright typeface, correct character dimensions and spacing, single shade of black characters, and a white (front) or yellow (rear) retroreflective background. The raised acrylic letter construction itself is not prohibited by the regulations. All 4D plates from Car Plates Direct meet these requirements and are fully road legal and MOT compliant.
Will 4D plates pass my MOT?
Yes. Our 4D plates comply with the current BS AU 145e standard including the post-September 2021 update requiring single-shade black characters. They will pass an MOT check. Plates with coloured 4D characters (neon, chrome, coloured acrylic) will NOT pass — we only supply compliant black character plates.
What is the difference between 3mm and 5mm 4D plates?
The number refers to the depth of the acrylic characters above the plate face. 3mm gives a refined, noticeable raised effect that is subtly bolder than 3D gel. 5mm gives the maximum legal depth — a more dramatic, architectural appearance with deep shadow lines. The 5mm option is the most popular with car enthusiasts who want maximum visual impact. Both are fully road legal.
Can my 4D plates go through a car wash?
Standard car washes — including automated brush-type washes and hand washing — are fine. The 3M adhesive used to bond the characters is rated for automotive outdoor use and is waterproof. However, we recommend avoiding directing a high-pressure jet wash nozzle point-blank at the character faces, as sustained extreme pressure could potentially stress the bond over time. Normal use, including driving in rain and regular washing, will not affect your plates.
Are coloured or neon 4D plates legal?
No. Since 1 September 2021, the DVLA regulations require that characters on number plates are a “single shade of black.” This explicitly rules out coloured acrylic characters — including neon yellow, green, blue, pink, and any metallic or colour-tinted finish. 4D plates with coloured characters will fail an MOT and could result in a fine of up to £1,000. Any supplier claiming coloured 4D plates are road legal is incorrect. Our 4D plates use only compliant black acrylic characters.
How do 4D plates compare to 3D gel plates in terms of durability?
Both are durable in normal driving conditions. 4D acrylic characters are very resistant to UV fading and weathering. The main distinction is in impact resistance: the taller raised profile of 4D characters makes them slightly more vulnerable to damage from physical knocks compared to the lower-profile, more rounded gel characters. In everyday driving and car park use, both styles perform well. For a vehicle regularly exposed to tight manoeuvring or risk of physical scrapes, 3D gel is marginally more robust.
Can I get 4D plates in motorcycle sizes?
Yes. We produce 4D laser-cut plates in standard motorcycle sizes including 9″×7″ and 7″×5.5″. They are manufactured with the correct two-line layout and motorcycle character dimensions as required by BS AU 145e. This is a popular upgrade for motorcycle riders who want a premium appearance while remaining fully road legal and MOT compliant.
